The WPFT Community is launching a new series called Five Questions With. The series is designed to help WPFT volunteers get to know each other by sharing pictures and comments about themselves and their involvement with WPFT.

Why is volunteering important to you?

Helping women of all ages has been important since I was nineteen.  My first job was as a counselor at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in 1975.  Boy , have we come a long way since then, thankfully!  Then I worked with Chicano girls at risk in New Mexico, as well as young offenders from inner city Chicago and St. Louis .  During and after graduate school, I worked  as a program director at an abuse, assault and rape crisis center and as an educator at the Women's Center at the University of Missouri.  At one point, I was asked to run an outdoor program for survivors of breast cancer.  That was in the early 1980's.  I decided to work for an executive leadership program instead.  Now, I seem to be retracing some important footsteps with my connection with WPFT.  Supporting women has always been an important thread in my life journey.

What is your favorite WPFT Event?

Definitely Dragon Boat Racing!  I am so glad Andrea Eliscu encouraged me to get involved  with that event.  The sense of personal empowerment, passion, and inspiration in the air that day  was  just so evident.   There was just an awesome sense of the conviction that " we are in this together" and it highlighted women's strengths.  It was truly incredible.

If you could speak to every women being treated for cancer, what would you say?

Reach out, Look Around, and See that there is lots of support and love surrounding you.  Don't be afraid to reach out.    We are here to honor, respect and help you on your journey.

What would surprise most people to learn about you?

That I spent a good part of my life in my 20's and early 30's backpacking, rock climbing and canoeing with people as an Outward Bound instructor and wilderness guide.  I used to sleep with my boots and water bottle in my sleeping bag just to keep them from freezing.

What is your favorite pastime?

Sharing my love  and connection with the outdoors with others.  Nature is an incredible teacher and healer.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Just my  most favorite quotes in the whole world:

"You were once wild here, don't let them tame you."  By Isadora Duncan, ( 1849-1927)  Creator of Modern Dance

I have attended two of Jamie's CEO leadership retreats in Sedona and have benefitted greatly from her leadership.

Can't wait till we find a way to use her talents for our OHF projects.
