Why is volunteering important to you?
WPFT takes the concept of volunteering to a whole different level. I enjoy being part of a group of dynamic women who are working together to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for Breast Cancer, while educating and helping women get the care they deserve. I think it’s more like a “club” of dedicated women who have diverse interests, but are all fighting for the same cause.
What is your favorite WPFT Event?
Now that’s a silly question to ask of me! Of course it’s the Lake Nona Golf Event which I have been the Chair for the past 5 years. I have played every year except when I was going through my radiation treatments. Of course, that was the year my team won prizes! Each year at the luncheon Elaine’s speech inspires me to be a better person. Her passion and dedication to WPFT is what keeps me coming back.
If you could speak to every women being treated for cancer, what would you say?
I remember having lunch with Hedy Schileifer when I was going through my treatment. The one thing she said to me was "keep a positive attitude and keep smiling!" I would recommend the book that she co-wrote when she was battling breast cancer. The name of the book is Sacred Choices by Judie Chiappone. I would recommend it to anyone going through Breast Cancer. Ask lots of questions but be sure there is someone with you because you will not hear or remember what the doctor has said. Be your own advocate and take charge of your own destiny.
What would surprise most people to learn about you?
Boy that is a tough question. I am pretty much an open book..what you see is what you get. My big mouth gets me into trouble sometimes with my children. Maybe people don’t know that I’m a terrible golfer, but I love the game!
What is your favorite pastime?
I love to play games on the computer like spider solitaire, Free Cell and Jigzone. I am learning to play bridge but my favorite card game is canasta. Being with my grandchildren is the most enjoyable and wonderful time of my life.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I am pleased to announce that Barbara Kaufman will co-chairing the Lake Nona Tournament with me this year. She is a dynamo and I look forward to working with her. It’s going to be a great tournament and I hope to see all the players back on the links at Lake Nona in October.
