Happy New Year!
Posted December 31, 2009, 9:17 pm in LeadershipTo all my friends,
It's hard to believe the year 2010 is about to begin. I remember when we were scared to turn the calendars to 2000---there was something ominous about another century. But here we are, snuggling to keep warm and grateful we have no snow to shovel. It' s not easy to regroup, but then again Women Playing For T.I.M.E. is all about regrouping and moving forward.
The year ended with controversy when a government task force announced it wasn't important to perform self examines or have early mammograms. But women responded like they never had the courage to do before------they said "forget it" -----it's our bodies and we will keep getting checked and we will do anything to stay alive and avoid this dreadful disease. We ARE speaking out and we ARE being heard.
I honestly believe that W.P.F.T. has made enough impact in the community to continue educating every woman who will listen-----and who will insist that doctors take us seriously. Thank goodness we have M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando behind us.
With the final amounts tallied for 2009, I am proud to inform you that we have raised more than $500,000----a figure we only dared to dream about in this economy. We know many of your lives have been impacted, but you continued to give----and to play----and to volunteer. I can only wish for the same in the year ahead.
Looking back on 2009, we have so much to be proud of and so many people to thank. We not only launched a Pink Dragon Boat Team, but a future of Dragon Boat team sports right here in Central Florida; we created elegant tables and delicious food with our great partners at Saks Fifth Avenue; united against cancer, we walked to raise awareness and funding with Bloomingdales; our beautiful gals at Orange Tree wrapped gifts and earned $600 for W.P.F.T.; we tried out our first couples golf event and Shelia Carter-Little is trying for another event at Bella Colina in 2010; Mickey Solomon came through with exquisite handbags and cashmere shawls for prizes at Lake Nona (did he have a weatherman contact?) and Lake Nona once again showed us what first class means; we moved our research labs out to Burnham (Dr.Cheryl Baker is grateful for the space to work); our golf event at Isleworth is set to go with new chair Joyce Bates; and most important of all, we had an early transfer into the New year with our website. Thanks to Mary Mahoney, McMurry, and the Growing Bolder Media Group.
It's not been a simple year for everyone. Many of you have watched friends undergo treatment-----and I lost my best man, Seymour, after 62 years. No supporting hands can take his place, but you all have been wonderful friends and I am deeply grateful.
Stay with us----work with us----and give us your TIME so that W.P.F.T. can continue to grow. My best wishes for a peaceful and caring 2010-----------be good to each other.
My love, Elaine
