I need a book suggestion!

My cousin is in the hospital after undergoing major surgery due to the recurrence of cancer. Originally, it was in appendix, but two years ago, that was removed and we thought the chemo wiped it all out. But this summer, the cancer came back with a vengeance: popping up on her uterus, colon and lower intestines. Now, she's recovering from a hysterectomy and the removal of part of her intestines and colon. And did I mention she's 30 years old with two children under 5?

Needless to say, she's feeling really down. She'll be in the hospital for at least three weeks. They did a chemo wash during the surgery and more chemo is planned in the coming days. She's in Pennsylvania and I feel helpless so I wanted to send her a care package.

For those of you who have undergone chemo, cancer treatments and hospital stays, what kind of books did you want to read? Inspirational? Escapism? Humor? Puzzles? I'm struggling to find something that will take her mind off her situation, however temporarily.

Many thanks for any and all advice!

    Hi Jackie and Aylin,

Aylin, I loved everyone of your suggestions and although I am not a survivor, I agree that hearing from people everyday can be a lift to the spirit.

Please forward me her address in the hospital and I'll be happy to send her a card from Women Playing For T.I.M.E. Also, if you think she's open to it, please invite her to start a blog in our Community, where I can promise you she will find many friends to laugh, cry and gather strength from.

The idea about picking up gifts for her kids was brilliant.....

    Jackie

Sorry to hear about your cousin my heart goes out to her.

Not sure about books because I really had chemo brain and was not able to focus on books however when I was going through chemo I went through lots of TV shows that I was not able to watch before. Lost -- was one of them. Oh and SATC -- anything but hospital shows.(those I weaned back on slowly in a couple of months) I rented the whole season. How about some I love Lucy shows.. or Everybody loves raymond.. etc..

What I also liked was the entertainment/visits of my friends .. games we played etc.

Sudoku might be something if she likes it.. I personally did not like that much of inspirational books after reading 1-2 they all felt the same but thats just me.

Also if you could coordinate with her friends/family so she will receive 1 getwell card/note from each person everyday.. that was certainly an uplift for me, or maybe a little surprise could be arranged that she could look forward to everyday (visit from a long lost friend.. food that she can tolerate .. People messages(where they dress up foolishly and deliver a message)

She might be feeling guilty for being in the hospital having her kids without her .. some gifts for the kids from her might make her feel better..

Just some ideas healing vibes your way !
